Altrusa is a network of clubs that each serve their community. Our clubs are free to determine their own service projects and fundraising efforts, tailored to local needs.
The members of our clubs, known as Altrusans, are energetic, service-minded people of all ages and ethnicities. Most of us are women, as Altrusa was founded in 1917 as a women’s organization, but we have welcomed men to our membership for over a decade.
Altrusa District Seven covers Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Upper Michigan, Ontario and Manitoba, Canada. To learn more about Altrusa, find your nearest club below.
We make our community better through leadership, friendship, and service.
Altrusa International of Ames is a thriving branch in the greater Altrusa International organization, leading by the principle that small efforts in local communities can lead to great impacts. As part of Altrusa’s District Seven, Altrusa International of Ames is focused on exactly that: volunteering our time, money, and individual efforts toward a collective effort to make our local community of Ames, Iowa a better place than it was before. We have many annual service projects, a major annual fundraiser that supports grant initiatives, and ad hoc projects that support as necessary.
We are a cross-generational group. A few of us still work full-time and are still actively raising families. Several of us have retired from wonderful careers and are enjoying grandparenting. This year, our Altrusans include a retired florist, a graphic designer, a communications coach, a writer, and so many others who come together to bring their unique professional and personal talents together to benefit their community through volunteering.
And we have lots of fun along the way! We are excited learners, inviting people from our local community into our business meetings for our monthly programs to learn more about the Ames community. Altrusans build strong friendships through intentional fellowship and love cheering on the local university team together–Go Iowa State Cyclones!
If you can’t find a club in your area, we’d be thrilled to help you start one!
We know that it may seem daunting to start from scratch, but you won’t be alone. We have an International New Club Building Committee who are dedicated to mentoring people like you. Our existing resources will help you to advertise Altrusa in your community, share information about our organization, determine the service needs of your area, launch new projects, teach you the ins and outs of Altrusa, and ultimately charter your club. We will support you, so that you can inspire others to join you in service.
